BRENDON JONES – DIRECTOR OF TOUCH

Meet Brendon Jones, our new Head of Touch Rugby. Originally from South Africa, Brendon has been living in Singapore for over three years and is incredibly passionate about the sport.

Brendon has two girls playing in the Academy (currently U12 and U14 Touch Rugby teams) and joined our coaching team in 2022. He has played touch for the Bushmen in the Singapore Touch League and has had a run out for the SCC Growlers.

Welcome to the SCC Rugby Academy family, Brendon!

His motto is hard work, heart & consistency.

JAY-HYKEL JAILANI – HEAD COACH FOR U11 TO U18

We are pleased to announce that Jay-Hykel Jailani has joined the SCC Rugby Academy Head Coaching Team as Head Coach for U11 to U18.

Jay joined the SCC Rugby Academy in 2019 coaching various age groups through the years starting from U4’s through to U19’s.

He has represented Singapore starting in the U14’s combined schools, U19’s, U23’s & Men’s 15’s squad. He also featured in Singapore Men’s 7s side from 2013 to 2020. He was the first ever Singaporean to play for the Asian Pacific Dragons when he was 21. He plays in the back 3 in 15’s and moved towards the forwards in 7’s. Jay currently plays for both the Tankards & Prems side in the SCC Rugby section for the men’s team.

We’re sure Jay’s youth, organisational structure & knack for keeping rugby simple will bring a breath of fresh air to the academy.

BAKE SALE AND BOOT SWAP – SATURDAY 23rd MARCH

Due to popular demand, and the larger boots not arriving in time for those who brought in smaller boots, we will be holding the boot swap again at training this weekend, Saturday 23rd March. If you have any boots at home that no longer fit, just bring them in and swap them for a pair that do! Any boots that are left over will be given to charity.

Please don’t forget to give the boots a clean before you bring them down, and also tie the laces together to make it easier for them to remain a pair!

BAKE SALE

We will also be holding a small Bake Sale SALE on Saturday 23rd March for the baked goods that weren’t sold last weekend! Head on up after training to pick up some cut-price cookies! Don’t worry, they have been carefully stored in the freezer so will be just as tasty this weekend! Once again, all money raised will be donated to the Wheelchair Rugby Association (Singapore).

IMPORTANT – MICROSPORIDIA HEALTH ADVISORY

With the recent very wet and muddy conditions, we would like to remind parents, and players, to ensure they wash their faces with water after playing in muddy conditions.

Microsporidia are spore-forming single-cell intracellular parasites. Since the early 2000s, microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis has been increasingly reported in Singapore, mostly after eye contact with wet soil or mud during outdoor activities. The main presenting signs and symptoms are eye redness, pain/foreign body sensation, photosensitivity and blurred vision.

All players who have been in contact with soil or mud should maintain good personal hygiene. We would encourage the children to bring extra water to wash their faces if they come into contact with mud, and to use different towels for the face and body immediately after training. If your child will use them, you may wish to keep eye drops in your children’s bag so they can apply them after training.

Do seek early medical consultation (e.g. an eye specialist) should your child experience symptoms such as itchy and painful red eyes with discharge occurring from two days up to three weeks after being in contact with soil or mud.

KIT

If your team is taking part in games or tournaments, we would kindly ask that you ensure that your child is wearing their full and up-to-date kit. They must wear the latest playing jersey/touch tops which have our sponsors latest logos on them (the two logos on the left). Please keep the old tops with the old logos just for training (for clarity, the old logos have the lighter blue in them).

We need to honour our sponsors contribution and support by wearing the tops that they have sponsored for us.
